Eldrik's family lived in the eastern portion of the Vesve Forest. His father made a modest living for them as a woodcutter, but this was not to last.

The hobgoblins of that area, under the influence of Iuz's agents and hating humans anyway, were worked into a frenzy of hatred and violence. The bloody massacre that resulted was one of the most horrible incidents witnessed in many years. Eldrik and his family were among the first victims...

Only a child, Eldrik witnessed every vile act of evil commited against his family. His father was disemboweled. His mother and little sister were subjected to brutal rape, afterwards they were tortured until death claimed them. They were butchered and roasted on a fire built from the lumber from their home. The stomach wrenching feast that the hobgoblins engaged in afterwards will forever haunt Eldrik until the end of his days on Oerth.

Eldrik, hidden in the trunk of a hollow oak, was protected and comforted by the dryaad who lived there until he was found by a patrol of Elves sent to quell the hobgoblin massacre. The elves took pity on the child and couldn't bear to leave him to die in the forest, so he was brought to live among them.

Eldrik was taught the hidden ways of the forest by the elves and grew to maturity while his elven playmates remained adolesents. The elves, realizing that he was now an adult, allowed him to leave. After leaving the elves, Eldrik travelled to town of Quaalsten and became a woodsman and evntually a Ranger of the Vesve.

Although the elves taught him kindness and gave him the skills of a ranger, they were never able to erase his hatred of hobgoblins of whom he has now sworn a blood vendetta.
